Every successful control has its&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#control-name\">control name<\/a>&nbsp;paired with its&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#current-value\">current value<\/a>&nbsp;as part of the submitted&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#form-data-set\">form data set<\/a>. A successful control must be defined within a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#edef-FORM\">FORM<\/a>&nbsp;element and must have a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#control-name\">control name.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"idx-disabled_controls-1\"><\/a>Controls&nbsp;that are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#disabled\">disabled<\/a>&nbsp;cannot be successful.<\/li>\n<li>If a form contains more than one&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#buttons\">submit button<\/a>, only the activated submit button is successful.<\/li>\n<li>All &#8220;on&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#checkbox\">checkboxes<\/a>&nbsp;may be successful.<\/li>\n<li>For&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#radio\">radio buttons<\/a>&nbsp;that share the same value of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#adef-name-INPUT\">name<\/a>&nbsp;attribute, only the &#8220;on&#8221; radio button may be successful.<\/li>\n<li>For&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#menu\">menus<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#control-name\">control name<\/a>&nbsp;is provided by a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#edef-SELECT\">SELECT<\/a>&nbsp;element and values are provided by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#edef-OPTION\">OPTION<\/a>&nbsp;elements. Only selected options may be successful. When no options are selected, the control is not successful and neither the name nor any values are submitted to the server when the form is submitted.<\/li>\n<li>The&nbsp;<a name=\"idx-file_select_control-1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#current-value\"><\/a>current value&nbsp;of a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html401\/interact\/forms.html#file-select\">file select<\/a>&nbsp;is a list of one or more file names. Upon submission of the form, the&nbsp;<em>contents<\/em>&nbsp;of each file are submitted with the rest of the form data.
